INTER-SCO NAVIGATION U.S. Patent
As I was browsing around Google's new tools I
happened across one of Googles new tools called
Google patents.
I did a quick search for "SCORM" and voila, SCORM patents. I had no idea, and I bet you didn't either, that SUN Microsystems had a patent on INTER-SCO Navigation, but it seems they do. The curious thing is that the abstract of the patent reads very similarly to just about any form of navigation that is commonly used in courseware today. Weird. Can SUN have an enforceable patent on courseware navigation? See for yourself. |

Metadata Test removed from ADL Test Suite
It seems that ADL has removed the metadata test
from their latest SCORM Test Suite. Most of you have
probably noticed it missing for some time, but I just
recently found out the "official" reason. Here it goes.
During the development of SCORM 2004 3rd Edition, ADL decided to remove conformance requirements relating to metadata. The Department of Defense (DoD) feels that metadata is highly related to registries and not SCORM in general. Because of this, if organizations want to use SCORM metadata, those organizations should elect to create their own profile of the IEEE LOM metadata. The DoD now sees metadata being used on the ADL Registry and NOT in the content package. Because of the change in the requirement, organizations that require metadata are also under the burden of creating their own test suite to test the metadata.
My feeling about all this is that organizations will either
use the old ADL Test suite to test metadata or not use
metadata
at all. Very few organizations will have the knowledge
or time to create their own rendition of the IEEE LOM
and then create a test to test and validate it.

Conform 2 SCORM
If you haven't already realized, SCORM is a big deal.
Many organizations, institutions and governments use
the standard to create sharable learning content.
Because of this many companies have jumped in this
market to assist developers with implementing the
specification. One of the best resources I have
found to keep up with all the changes in product
offerings is Conform2SCORM.
Conform2SCORM, one of my favorite SCORM sites, hosts lists and forums of these vendors and adopters. They also provide job boards, news, and directories of service and tool providers all related to SCORM. Conform2SCORM is a great resource to use to compare SCORM products, learn more about the industry, and get to know the those in the know. |
